How to organize a successful pickup soccer match

Pickup soccer thrives on three things: the right venue, balanced teams, and a community of players who actually show up. This guide walks through the workflow Hubbolla organisers use every weekend to fill a roster, run a great match, and keep players coming back.

1. Pick the right venue

Match the venue to the format. 5-a-side and futsal courts work for groups of 10–12; full pitches need 18+ to feel competitive. Confirm availability with the facility directly — Hubbolla connects players, but venue bookings stay with the organiser. Check lighting for evening games and parking for travelling teammates.

2. Recruit players by position

The fastest way to ruin a pickup match is "everyone wants to be a striker." Open slots by position — goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, wingers and strikers — so the roster stays balanced. On Hubbolla you set the count per position and players request the slot that fits them.

3. Lock kickoff and team colours

Send a confirmation the night before with kickoff time, address, and a "bring a light and a dark shirt" reminder. Pending requests block the match from filling — approve early so reserves know whether they're in.

4. Run the game

Arrive 15 minutes early. Split teams by colour, agree on rolling subs, and pick someone to keep loose stats — goals, assists, and player of the match. Recording results in Hubbolla powers each player's profile and helps future organisers trust the squad.

5. Rate teammates and build the community

After full-time, rate teammates on teamwork, sportsmanship and reliability. Ratings recognise commitment and help organisers pick trusted players for the next match. Over time, this is what turns a one-off pickup into a real community.
